Soooooo, I
am already starting to see what Ruby could have referred to regarding my
structure outline needing to be preliminary. After editing the next section
(Entrepreneurship and Business, which you will see today in class), I am seeing
the ways that the mold will fold into a sort of blob, allowing for other parts
that are not specifically aligned with categories, to be included. I will say,
however, that the categorical system has been good for organizational purposes.
Because I have done basically a similar format of editing with the last two
sections (the last one being Boi(s) and Such), I can draw parallels to the
content that I have cut. For example, I am seeing that in pairing the energies
and statement of two participants in each of these sections (Alyah and Nenna
and Roman and Brooklyn), a direct and also indirect reflection of the two comes
into view. With Nenna and Roman being “stronger” interviews, there is a balance
that occurs when these interviews are cut in partnership with Alyah and Brooklyn’s
(“less stronger”). In addition, I see that the segments with the “less
stronger” interviews also work well with more visual play, while Roman and
Nenna type interviews draw the viewer in just simply with their presence and
words. Another advantage with the pairing system is that the pairs say similar
things, so I can ultimately choose who says what in such a way that fits the
rest of the narrative. Lastly on my analysis of the pairs of participants in
sections, I am seeing the potential for the participants’ segments to be “in
conversation” with one another. Ideally, I wanted each “story” to feel as if
they represent different artistic aspects, yet, are presented as one
conceptually unified voice, like one stream of consciousness, able to engage in
a larger conversation both through visual cut aways and actual content.
Other thoughts…As of now, I have shown the class a total of
7 participants, representing 7 voices of this one neo-Renaissance movement.
With the help of four more interviews of four more participants (yet to be
introduced), I feel more confident with having the material I need.
Also, I went back into the field on Saturday to interview DJ
Lady Ryan (a new character coming soon). It was successful, but only through
some intense, on the spot, stressful trouble shooting of the lav mic. Yay for
living and breathing the life as a documentarian.
