This was probably the busiest week of my academic career. A big grant due last Friday on the same day as my thesis proposal was due. Ack. Two giant BFDs. This required me to restructure my Secret History proposal from the ground up (though recycling some of my previous writing). The other SocDoc grads are on a different schedule and have either already finished their thesis proposal or it has to be done at a vague future time. So while this week everyone is chill and I'm freaking out, there will be a date coming up when I am chill and they are freaking out.
While I did very little video work, I did do a lot of important research and thought about the project. I met with each of my thesis committee members who had lots of great complementary suggestions. There were some good open questions asked about how this work will be presented in the final installation. A tablet? A laptop? Is it just too big to confine to a little screen? What about audio only? Privately with individual wireless headphones? Only on paper? Hidden in secret places in the shantyboat?
Nothing has changed with my desire to offer an interactive web doc. So I'll proceed on that front. But I've also done a little research on alternative ways of doing generative web storytelling. In DANM I'm in the Playable Media group, so there are many talented experts in this area.
Here are the things that I am desperately needing to do in the short-term:
- Choose 5 story paths
- Process new video I shot this weekend
- Sync video with sound
- Finish last few transcripts
- Index transcripts to help with selecting scenes
- Choose selects from interviews (selects from B Roll are done)
- Pull selects into either well-chosen bins or timelines (need to figure that out)
That's enough for now, I think. Whew.
