I think I envisioned that I would gather the river stories during my fieldwork, cut them up, sort them, and put them together in some clever interactive way, and magic would emerge.
In reality it feels like I am trying to cobble together disjointed footage of talking heads. With various sound problems. And mismatched color. And missing video. And not enough complementary B Roll.
I'm sure it would be a bit easier, if I had a story. I think that is where I thought the magic would come from, that a story would emerge. However, watching all the interviews and reading transcripts, people's thoughts are all over the place. How do I put it all together without mortaring it together with my voice?
I'm so open to suggestions about how to make this work. Lots of opportunity for critique.
In other news, I did show the piece, that is, the shantyboat, in Oakland the other weekend, and the boat was offered as a stage for acoustic music. It was very well received. I gathered lots of written stories from visitors to the boat. I'm showing on Friday again at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History.
I prepared a simple scene for the exhibition. It is quietly pedantic about the pleasures of being on the water on the shantyboat.
I also did a short rough video that features footage from the exhibiton.
