Week 5 Update - Rana

In terms of logging/hard-drive: I did more cleaning, organizing, and renaming files - mainly resolving the issues that were detected after meeting Tristan. I plan on meeting Tristan again this Friday to ensure that the drive is officially complete and ready to be backed up.

After discovering that Pascal's interview was salvageable, I spent a good few days familiarizing myself really well with that conversation. It's fully transcribed, and I've been marking all the different parts of the interview on paper. So in terms of selects, I started doing that on paper first (on my transcripts rather than on FCP) for both Pascal and Rakan's interviews. I've also been jotting down notes on my other footage of the city, but haven't marked them on FCP yet - because I know myself very well to get distracted and confused by going a step ahead when I'm still not completely clear on my drive.

As I've been thinking about scenes, I had initially started building a scene on the development of the city. But then I decided to focus on Rakan joyriding as a start, while also thinking of Pascal's interview. I wanted to try to see what can be used from Rakan's footage, that can give a visual account for ideas of spatiality, masculinity, and just cars. The other Riyadh from Rakan's lens (or rather the world the joyriders make for themselves). This is also in line with what I am doing for LIT class, as I'm writing a narrative of Riyadh based on two relationships to the city (mine and Rakan's). I'm considering the option that this documentary will tell two stories in parallel, that will hopefully fit into a bigger picture. The Riyadh I see, both the good and bad, needs to be seen by others - so I do feel a responsibility to show that Riyadh.

Soraya Murray directed me to a couple of texts, including "Cinematic Urbanism: A History of the Modern from Reel to Real" that are helpful in terms of thinking about how I and my fellow citizens imagine the everyday of Riyadh. Sometimes I drift from my project and think about a potential documentary about Riyadh through the eyes of five different residents... Then I think OK, let's start by seeing Riyadh through two people first.

Overall I'm having fun, getting inspired and thinking creatively... but also losing a lot of sleep.
