At the
moment, things are moving along…at least better than before, which means steps
in the right direction. As it turns out, it has been rather difficult to
calculate the total amount of hours I have, as I have to first finish
transcoding and Log and Transfer all my footage into FCP to get the time code. Tristan
suggested bringing everything in and then pulling it down on a timeline to
figure out the total time. More on this soon, as I am in the process now of
finishing transcoding all the DSLR footage and have yet to really begin logging
everything in. Tristan also suggested organizing everything on the finder level
before bringing it into FCP. This way, the names of the clips on the hard drive
directly match the names of the folders and bins in FCP.
Another strategy I see that is good
for me is to organize footage via naming and cataloging systems and then
visually draw out on a white board the over arching picture of what I see these
clips (and pick up shots) falling into. In doing this, I have thus come to a
basic break down of what I would like to include in the documentary content.
Ideally, I can find a way to address most if not all of the following within
the 20 minute time frame: larger analysis/ portrait of “Black” identity and
culture, entrepreneurism through the queer image, countering invisibility
through reimagined and recreated images, the queer as a mode to create and
sustain the self regardless of identity, trans and gender nonconforming social
justice, liberatory politics via the arts, and archival references to the
Harlem Renaissance. The individuals that I have interviewed and/ or will
interview overlap in these areas.
Additional
strategies include noting clips as select during the viewing and logging
process. I have begun to denote the selects with an * in front of the title and
description fields. These clips stand out in some way, either for building
logical sequences, good lighting and color, good fit for content and/or overall
vision. This seems helpful moving towards the next steps in pulling together
sequences of selects. Once I begin transcribing, I will also note poignant
and/or well-stated commentary as select.
