How it is possible I don't know know how to do some of the things that are so basic to even semi-experienced video editors?
For instance, I wanted to make a simple little excerpt video that was based on a subclip. While I was able to make a subclip, it's "in" and "out" times were fixed and could not be extended/retrimmed beyond the zero point. Thus, I couldn't readjust the original cuts I'd made to make the subclip. I could make it shorter, but I couldn't make it longer.
I'm not even sure that makes any sense since I'm just learning the vocabulary. I'd have to show you. It is frustrating, especially knowing that there is an easy way to do it and everyone knows it except me. Time to get some tutelage from an expert.
In other news, the extra work I did earlier, all my logging and ingesting into Premiere meant that for the first time in my SocDoc class I didn't feel hopelessly behind this week.
I do still have to pull my selects. Not simple really with 14 hours of interview video. But I can definitely do some process of elimination. I know the fiddly bits before the interviews -- where I'm shuffling paperwork and messing with mic and camera -- will not be used for either the archive nor the documentary work. There are also B Roll things that can be eliminated, video tests, focusing bits, other junk that will never be useful to anyone.
I also need to put together 20 minutes of footage to give a flavor of what I have. Should I use a few representative interviews? Lots of the B Roll? A combination? We'll see. I have to do that before Wednesday. Maybe tomorrow afternoon. Maybe I won't get to sleep tomorrow night.
In other news, working with my production team, transcription is nearly done. We have been pulling inspiring excerpts from the interviews to share on the project blog.
We have been brainstorming and prioritizing the paths and protagonists we want to use while planning the documentary work. Soon we will have to get down to brass tacks and start planning what that looks like. I think our process will be a lot different than that of straight linear doc makers, but we will see.

yes, subclips are of limited use–I think I mentioned in class that I only use them for very specific, rare situations and not to make selects (because they are inflexible). Markers are much more flexible (and can mark off a duration).
