Week 2 Blog Post:
In reflection, the basic
organizational structure of my footage gathered over the summer consists of
observational footage and interviews. Observational scenes will serve as
supporting material for interviews, as well as, for transition and establishing
shot purposes. Interviews provide the main substantive content of the film,
connecting the conceptual dots of what the observational footage represents. I
have yet to film any significant landscape or city shots, however, when this is
done, this will be a third category. Right now, the relative ratio of footage is
overwhelmingly granted to observational footage. I am confident that with more
time in the field on weekends throughout the quarter, the interview section
will grow. I speculate that there will be a pretty much even split between
interview and observational footage.
I am relatively still in the
beginning stages of the organizational process. I have cloned and backed up all
footage and am transcoding my DSLR footage as I type this. Though my Master
Field Log is primarily finished, I still need to calculate and add in the time
duration of each scene and provide the total number of hours at the end. Log
and transfer of all my FS100 footage is next, followed by beginning to
construct associated Bin names in Final Cut Pro. From here, I still need to ingest all my
footage into FCP, including the DSLR transcoded .mov files, and check to see if
the frame rate matches up across the two types of footage. I plan on logging
specific information for each clip as I import or transfer. Once I am done with
this, I still need to copy the transcoded and capture scratch material to all
three hard drives. I also still need to transcribe the eight interviews that I
have, so I can begin to have a better idea of what else I need from when I go
back into the field.
Regarding style and form, I
initially wanted to do an experimental essay film. It would be experimental in
the sense that the film incorporates other mediums, such as, documentary
photography, motion graphics, dance, and archival footage. Two films that I draw inspiration from are
Marlon Riggs’ Tongues Untied and
Isaac Julien’s Looking For Langston.
I would like to merge the experimental artistry of Riggs’ work with the rich,
beautiful shots of Julien’s. However, given that this film will be in essay
format, I am wondering how best to bring all these elements together or if it
is possible that they all can come
together. I am keeping my eyes open for what lends itself best to the footage
overall. I could honestly use additional recommendations of films to watch.
