Watching “Cannibal Tours” made me regret not making my film more on the visiting cruise ships. That would have given the film the political nuance I want for my final project. These days, I am trying to get my head around how to “put the Soc in the Doc” most effectively. Drawing up a mosaic of the young people in town can get the flux of our era across. But I am not sure how to provoke intellect, something beyond the excotic and visceral. I think my issues rise from the fact that I went to the field not completely sure what kind of documentarian I wanted to be, just arriving with an idea for a film that did not pan out empirically. I have a sense for the aesthetics and style I wish for, at least photographically, but once the material is at a certain production standard the idea is what counts. That's what I am searching for--how to frame the big picture--as I continue logging.
