Michelle's Week 2 Update

This week has been extremely productive. I spent hours and hours getting deep into my footage and trying to organize everything in the most meaningful and practical way. I found myself searching for clips I thought I had to find out that I didn’t actually capture that and then discovering clips I have that I completely forgot about or have no reconnection of capturing. I have finished transcoding all of my footage and creating my scene list and master log. I have logged 10 of the 20 days and about half of the interviews are already scripted.
In general I feel like my footage is well dispersed between interviews and observational. I do not have as many establishing shots from around the community in Panama as I would like and a lot of my scenes from Panama are not captured from start to finish as I would have hopped.
After going through my footage, I have decided to change my working title from “Granos de Vida” to “ Bittersweet Harvest” this is still a working title, but at this point I think this name better reflects my intentions of the film.
As far as style and form are concerned, I am still completely lost as to how I can combine the industry interviews while maintaining my character Samuel and his story as the primary thread.  I have been unable to find a film that successfully does this.
A piece that I recently watched was apart of this this Transmedia piece for Marketplace.  It shows the lives of the people behind the t-shirts they make. I do not want to incorporate expository narration, but I do want to be able to show the life of Samuel (the chocolate farmer) and how what he is doing in Panama directly relates to us as consumers and the choices we make.

I have also been thinking a lot about labels and how to incorporate the familiar verbiage related to Fair Trade typically writing on labels. I have started collecting chocolate wrappers and thinking about different ways I can use either animation or stop motion etc to bring them to life and show how Fair Trade chocolate is Marketed.
Also, even though I thought I was done shooting, I realized that I wanted to reach out to a representative from “Fair Trade.” As of now I have no heard back from them, but I will continue to pursue this. Their offices are in Oakland, Ca, so it is feasible to make this happen.  I also may want/need to get some shots inside a chocolate factory. More “glamor” shots of making chocolate from the bean to the bar.
