I actually feel quite pleased with what came together. I am
working on having the participants, along with the different arguments and
segments, be in conversation with one another, in some way. The visual and
sound play deliberately tries to facilitate this.
This rough cut includes a constellation of selects from all
eight of my film participants, as well as, various Oakland community events. Both
conceptually and stylistically, I am also playing with the use of motifs and
reoccurring themes. I remember in one of our classes Irene suggested the party
scenes have their own space outside of being used as observational material
during interviews. I spent some time thinking and over thinking how to do it in
a way that also makes sense with the rest of the flow of the film. Also, I
decided to abandon the original “street band” motif idea. So what came out, was
a new structure or rather a continuation of the first one I did. With this new
structure, the “dance/ party” sequences are cut in such a way to really take
the viewer on a journey into that world. There are a total of five “dance/party”
motifs and “four visual/music play sequences”. The observational footage in
these segments also balances the interview time and supports the arguments made
by participants.
Looking forward, I see myself making some calculated
decisions on whom else to interview. Right now there are a few people I had on
my list, but at this point, I am unsure of who would best benefit the film at
this stage. Stay tuned... During winter quarter I also need to gather some
minor observational footage of a few participants, as well as, general Oakland
city shots.
